sleepmakeswaves release new EP 'Out of Hours' featuring singles 'Zelda' & 'Pyramids'

LISTEN HERE

‘Out of Hours’, featuring the singles ‘Zelda’ and ‘Pyramids’ is the latest in a series of new music from Australian post-rock band sleepmakeswaves – their first releases in 3 years, following their ARIA-nominated albums Made of Breath Only (2017) and Love of Cartography (2014).

‘Out ofHours’ follows ‘No Safe Place’ in the band’s ‘these are not your dreams’ EPtrilogy and steps further into bold, unexplored territory.

‘Zelda’ is aunique shift in sound for the usually entirely instrumental band – it featuresa prominent lead vocal line throughout the song. With lyrics penned and sung byguitarist Otto Wicks-Green, it’s the first true foray into traditional leadvocal territory for sleepmakeswaves. Although they’ve experimented with vocalsbefore (including January’s well-received single ‘Cascades’), it’s never beenas much at the forefront as this.

Fromguitarist Otto Wicks-Green:

‘Zelda’ is a bit of a departure for us. We’re trying to pushthe edges of what this band can do and play in these new spaces that call ondifferent aspects of our influences. This is a bit of 90s posthardcore janglewith some shouting. We like it.

Meanwhile,‘Pyramids’ is a trademark sleepmakeswaves rock epic – with driving grooves, dynamic builds and falls, plus a few monster riffs. The band returns to theirregular instrumental palette with plenty of melodic flourishes. This time it’smulti-instrumentalist Alex Wilson who takes centre stage with a memorable basssolo mid-piece.

From AlexWilson:

"Pyramids marries cosmicspace-rock noodling with stupidly boneheaded riffs, and I love it for thatreason. The original exotic melody was kicking around in my head and gettingdemo'd back in the Made of Breath Only album days but it took a while for us togive it the time it deserved. This is one I really can't wait to playlive."

Theinstrumental ‘Menthol’ and return of vocals on ‘Embraced’ see the ‘Out ofHours’ EP as a whole showcasing more of the band’s 90s alternative/emoinfluences, whilst still retaining all the powerhouse drive and emotionalimpact of their trademark instrumental writing.

All musicwas entirely self produced, recorded & mixed by the band. Rather thanfollowing a conventional release pattern, the band have opted to release thiscollection of tracks as a series of 3 EPs during 2020, which will then bereleased in full in July as part of the ‘these are not your dreams’ record.

From theband:

‘these are not your dreams’ refers to howmodern life is rubbish and the internet is invading our brains. It’s controlthrough disorientation and the manipulation of ‘your dreams.’

Every song from this series has been anexperiment in how far we can push ourselves creatively and sonically... becausewhat else is there?

There's so much going on all the time, why dopeople need more?

We've set ourselves the challenge of answeringthat question every day we've worked on our material.

And we wanted to work harder than ever to justifyit in an age of limitless novelty.

We're producing all of these as a one-time limited edition release & we're happy to be using recycled materials to produce these physical products wherever possible, as well as offsetting the carbon footprint for the other merch packages.

It’s been a long time coming. If you're still here, we hope you understand how grateful we are to have your support after all these years. We're proud and excited to share this with you, and we want to thank our dear friend and manager Mike for sticking with us to see this through. That's it from us.
