Solkyri Announce 10th Anniversary Tour & Release of Debut Album ‘Are You My Brother?’ on Vinyl

Australian post-rock quartet SOLKYRI have announced they will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album ‘Are You My Brother?’ with shows in Melbourne & Sydney this November. The album will also be released on vinyl for the first time, through Bird’s Robe & Dunk Records.

Solkyri have recently returned home from their second European tour in 6 months alongside fellow Aussies We Lost The Sea. The shows included playing Belgium’s Dunk Festival, Denmark’s A Colossal Weekend, Germany’s Gloomaar Festival and a series of packed club shows across Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, France & Spain. The tour also included a sold out show at 229 in London, marking their first ever appearance in the UK.

The upcoming Australian shows will take place at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on Friday 24 November and Sydney’s The Vanguard on Sunday 26 November. They will be joined by Melbourne band and labelmates TREEBEARD, who will also be celebrating the anniversary of their ‘Nostalgia’ record and their recent signing to Bird’s Robe.

The shows will mark their first time in Melbourne since 2020 and their first hometown show in 6 months, since returning from Europe.

As part of the Bird’s Robe Records 10th anniversary series, their debut full-length album ‘Are You My Brother?’ will be released in cooperation with Belgium’s famous Dunk Records and pressed on 180g vinyl for the first time.

Originally released in 2013, the record helped the band earn recognition as part of a burgeoning post-rock and post-metal scene in Sydney, alongside notable acts such as sleepmakeswaves, Meniscus, Dumbsaint, Panzer Queen, Mish, We Lost The Sea & Lander Configurations. Their early live performances led to a partnership with Bird’s Robe and extensive touring in their home country with sleepmakeswaves.

The lead single from the album ‘Hunter’ saw airplay on triple j, as well as introducing the band’s quirky sense of humour with their now iconic ice cream video – made on a budget of only $50.

The album also features a hidden gem in the form of ‘Home’ – a collaboration with vocals from a then-unknown, now-revered Hannah Joy from Middle Kids.

The album oscillates between their trademark pummelling instrumental rock and waves of gorgeously arranged melody. Amongst these it features live staples of the band’s touring show, including ‘Threads of An Old Life’ and ‘I Am The Motherf*cker.’

Following the release of ‘Are You My Brother?’ (2013) and ‘Sad Boys Club’ (2015) the band increased their touring considerably. They toured alongside Maybeshewill (UK), …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (USA) and Mew (DEN) as well as heading to Europe for their first international performances at Belgium’s Dunk Festival in 2015, touring alongside fellow Australians Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. They also headlined their own shows at clubs along the east coast and shared stages with The Red Paintings, 65daysofstatic (UK) and Vampillia (JPN).

In 2020, they returned with their third record ‘Mount Pleasant’, further enriching their catalogue as a pummelling, dynamic instrumental rock act and debuting at #1 on the 100% Independent Charts in Australia and #90 on the ARIA Chart. They joined MONO (JPN) as part of their 20th anniversary tour before being sidelined by the pandemic until returning for a sold out hometown show to finally launch their album in 2021.

2022 and 2023 saw them focus on a return to Europe, spending 7 weeks abroad touring alongside We Lost The Sea and playing festivals across the continent.

The young post-rock group have continued a long recording and production relationship  with former Canberra resident, now London-based producer Dax Liniere (Meniscus, Dumbsaint, sleepmakeswaves) across all their records and are currently working on their next release, due in 2024.

‘Are You My Brother?’ has been remastered by Liniere for vinyl and is a wonderful glimpse back at the exciting emergence of one of Australia’s most beloved post-rock acts of the past decade.

Director Mike Solo of Bird’s Robe says:

I still remember hearing the debut Solkyri album for the first time and the incredible impact that hearing ‘Hunter’ and ‘Home’ had on me. Solkyri were beloved by all the bands involved with Bird’s Robe and had showed so much potential on the ‘No House’ EP. It was truly exciting to hear them take a big step up to another level with ‘Are You My Brother?’

One of my favourite moments was seeing that now iconic video clip – Solkyri + ice cream – two things I very much enjoy = an unforgettable performance.

They were a trio back then, but the addition of Ryan Fitz-Henry on guitar not long after has taken their live show to new heights. I’m really excited to see them revisit these songs in November. They’ve been in fantastic form over the past couple of tours and they always put in the work to deliver an unmissable live show.

If you like energetic post-rock, memorable hooks and plenty of emotion – Solkyri is a guaranteed win for you.

Bassist Andrew Pearsall says:

It's incredible to even begin to think that our debut album is 10 years old. It only felt like a little time ago that we entered the studio in Penrith to record this album. I am personally very proud of this release as the band showed a lot of ambition and desire to make this album as good as it can be. There's interesting percussion, string and brass arrangements as well as some vocal work which was new territory for both us and our scene at the time. It's been exciting to revisit some of these classic songs in our setlist and we think our fans are going to have a real buzz hearing them live again.
